The Memory Drum is a classic piece of experimental psychology laboratory equipment originally designed to study serial learning, rote memory, and nonsense syllable retention. This web-based digital simulator modernizes the traditional mechanical apparatus. It allows psychology undergraduates and researchers to conduct precise cognitive memory trials directly in the browser, eliminating the need for expensive, legacy physical hardware.
This digital simulator is dedicated to Dr. Mary Whiton Calkins (1863–1930), the pioneering American psychologist who originally developed the mechanical memory drum and the paired-associate learning technique. Despite fulfilling every requirement for a Ph.D. with distinction, Harvard University consistently refused to grant her the degree solely on the basis of her gender. Her legacy is a lasting reminder that brilliant, necessary work exists entirely independent of institutional validation.
